The New Mexico Tax Research Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, member-supported organization dedicated to providing fact based principled research and analysis to the tax policy debate in New Mexico.

We do not advocate any agenda for or against taxation. We seek only to study, inform and educate the public and tax policy makers concerning the pressing issues of taxation facing our state. We believe that well-versed policymakers and an active, informed citizenry are essential for effective representative government.

The New Mexico Tax Research Institute is organized and operates as a corporation pursuant to § 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code and welcomes individuals, businesses and organizations as members.

There are many reasons to belong to the New Mexico Tax Research Institute. Two of the principal reasons are succinctly stated in the following two quotes, both from opinions delivered by the Supreme Court of the United States.

"The power to tax involves the power to destroy" - McCulloch v. Maryland, 17 U.S. 316 (1819), Chief Justice John Marshall.

“Taxes are what we pay for civilized society” Campañía General de Tabacos v. Collector, 275 U.S. 87, 100 (1927), Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, dissenting.
